Simply, the router’s password is the shield protecting your network from the security trouble. However, it is only used when changing router settings so it’s quite easy to forget.
In this article, I will give you a detailed guide to get back this password and tips and tricks to help you even if you don’t have any experience in it. Let’s begin.

Use The Default Login Information To Recover Router Password
Most producers provide the fixed defaults username and password for the first login time. If you didn’t change any login information, it would be really easy to recover router password.
Try the common login information
It’s the easiest way to get your router password back. Typically, the most common model will use the same login information for all. Here are some of the most common passwords! Check them out!
- Use ‘’admin’’ word for both of admin and password
- Use ‘’admin’’ word for admin login and a blank password or vice versa
It is the easiest way to get back your router password, yet it will not work when your device is the rare model or the password has been changed before. In case these common passwords can’t help, you should consider these methods above.
Read the router’s manual
Different brands will give different router passwords for their device, which is why you can’t use the method above. But don’t worry too much, this also is a simple way of getting your router password back..
Find the password in the router’s manual, including all of your wifi configurations. If you didn’t see anything, look for the small sticker in the back of your router, it might print your router password.

This page is a huge repository that includes all of the default router passwords on the internet. Of course, this way only can be used when you haven’t changed any login information before.
Now, what you need to do is click here. Then scrolling down and looking for the ‘’Select your Router Manufacturer’’ line. Choose your model in the table and click the ‘’find password’’ button. Well done! Your password and username will appear on the right of the table.
Note*: Although they are from the same manufacturer, they often use different passwords for each model. So, consider your model and use the right information on the ‘’ model’’ column.
Use the Router Password Kracker software
*Serious note before using this method: This software is useful only when you forget this router password and you have the username, IP address. Otherwise, this method will not work.
Router Password Kracker is a crack wifi software to recover the forgotten password. It has various free features such as reset the router or find the pass, find login password protected by DIGES/HTTP BASIC.
Generally, this tool can help you to quickly get back your router password by using multiple attempts to log in the wifi system with different credentials each time. However, it may not work if your system protects against multiple logins or you have to change the password before.
Cool, right? As in this article, this tool is only used to crack the router password, so don’t worry much about those features.
First, you must download and install it here.
When you finish downloading, you need to locate the file .exe of this software. Then double click and wait for the setup in a few seconds.
Typing the IP address into the IP line. In case you have no idea about it, you can search for available ones on the Internet.
*Get your IP in the Run dialogue.
Nevertheless, even if you could not find anything on the Internet, you can also quickly get it in the Run dialogue.
Now, press the key combination Window+R to open the Run dialogue by. Next, type ‘’cmd’’ and ENTER.
Next, type IPconfig, press Enter and scroll down to see your IP in the Default Gateway line.
After that, fill the username in the blank. If you forget, you can try with root, admin, root, user, or even leave it blank and click the ‘’Star crack’’ button.

Use the RouterPassView software to decrypt a router configuration file
In case you have changed the password before, this method is appropriate for you. However, it only works when you have the configuration file.
So, what is the configuration file?
It’s a file saved when you back-up in the router access. No matter what model you have, this configuration file will be useful to get back your password.
Typically, the RouterPassView can decrypt the configuration file and give you all your login information including the router password. In short, this software will work with most wifi brands such as Linksys, Netgear, TP-Link, Edimax, D-Link….
First, download the RouterPassView here. When your download finishes, open it immediately without further setup.
In the main window of RouterPassview, use the Ctrl+O key to open the ‘Open Router Config File’ option and choose the appropriate file. You can also drop the configuration file into the main window.
Now, scroll down and find your correct password. If it does not work, the window will stay empty. In that case, you can try to switch to Ascii Text Mode by pressing F3 or switching to Hex Dump Text Mode by F4.
*Note: When you have finished recovering the router password by this method and changed the password, don’t forget to backup the configuration file again for the next time.
For users with no experience, don’t worry, just follow these steps below.
- Open your browser: Google Chrome, Edge, etc.
- Type the IP address you have found above into the searching bar
- Click on the Administration tab and choose backup to file
- Save it in the individual file and put it in a particular folder.
Reset Your Router
You probably use this last method if all above didn’t work. Reset your router will change all of your login information to the default settings, so make sure to keep this in mind.
Before beginning the reset of your router, let’s check some settings that will be changed:
- First, the login account
- Second, the wifi password
- Third, all of the firmware updates will be deleted and back to the factory setting.
- All of the configuration setting
It is a serious step that you must consider and pay careful attention to. If you really want to reset your device, follow these steps below and don’t miss anything.
Most of the Wi-Fi routers are equipped with a small reset button and don’t confuse with the reboot button. You can find it in the back of the device, below RESET. Normally, it is a small pinhole.
Use the paperclip or small stick
Now, you should prepare a paperclip or small stick then put it into the pinhole. When you hear the ‘’click’’ sound, hold it for 10 seconds or more.
You’ll typically wait until your router’s front lights change. The lights can start to blink or turn blinkered to solid depending on the model or brand. Be careful with it; the reset is successful when you see the change of the light.
How to recover router password is not a simple question. It isn’t like getting back the wifi password because the login information is created to protect your network from security problems.
However, it is possible by following these methods in this article. Besides, I also give many notes to ease the process. In my experience, if you have to change the password, you should back up the configuration file for emergencies.
