Asus rt-n66u Setup – Detailed Guide that You Can’t Miss!

The Asus rt-n66u is one of the most outstanding wireless routers ever. It is incredibly fast and robust for its price range. However, the Asus rt-n66u setup can be a bit confusing.

Setting up the wifi system is not just simply buying a router. It’s much more complicated than that. If you don’t have any experience in doing this, you will feel quite frustrated.

Don’t worry! This article will show you a comprehensive guide to help you out.

Hardware- The First Step of the Asus rt-n66u Setup

HardwareFirst things first, you need to set up the hardware because after all, no device can work without the hardware, the Asus rt-n66u setup too!

Let’s begin!

  • Attach antennas
As you know, the antenna is an indispensable part of the router. It directs the signal to all the corners of the house, which helps you to connect to wifi from a distance. Therefore, the antennas must be installed first.
There are three antennas included in the total, and you just need to screw all of them into place firmly. Easy, right?
  • Plug router into a power source
Next, check the power source. The manufacturer often provides the power jack beside antennas. Just plug it in.
  • Plug router into an internet source
This is also a fairly simple step, in which you plug one end of the gate Ethernet cord into the blue Ethernet port on the back of the router. Of course, you must already have a cable modem and Internet via a DSL modem, cable modem.

Software

Well done! Your device is finally connected now. However, it still needs some critical software to work well.

Let’s move on to the next steps.

Connect to the Router

Connect to the routerThe first step is to connect to the router. Please make sure you have carefully done these steps above. In case your router doesn’t work, you must check the power source or the internet source again.

If it seems to run well, let’s continue!

First, start your computer, then look for the wifi icon.

You can find it on the top right corner on Macs or the bottom right corner on Windows systems.

Now, there are two options in the wifi tab ( Asus and Asus 5G). You can click on any tag you want.

Open the Router’s Access Page in Your Browser

Different brands will provide different router’s access pages. With Asus, it is a profession page that may look strange to you.

So make sure to read the instructions carefully and do not miss any step.

First, open your browser and go to http://192.168.1.1

If you are doing it right, you should be now on this page.

Create the Account for Your Wifi

create username and password asusGood news! You don’t need to access this page every day to connect to wifi. However, this is the first time and you will need to create an account.

On the “Quick Internet Setup” tab -> “Check the information”, fill in your administrator’s username and password.

For security purposes, be sure to pick a unique username and a secure password as well.

Refer to the usernames and passwords on page 192.168.1.1 most accurately

Be warned! It will require this information when you alter the settings. So, you can write them in the box or paste at the router bottom lest you happened to be absent-minded.

After that, wait for it to detect your Internet connection type. It will take a second or longer, depending on your Internet.

Create a Name for Your Network

It is my favorite step. Be creative because you can put any name you want, even funny names such as “no wifi, let’s guess..” – that is my favorite one.

You can also use the same name or password for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. However, we suggest that you use a different name and password for each.

I am now going to tell you an important trick for you to have the fastest connection.

The 5GHz bandwidth is faster than the 2.4GHz, but it has a smaller range and is more sensitive to solid objects like walls. Therefore, it is suitable for playing HD video and gaming, which needs the fastest bandwidth.

The 2.4GHz network, on the other side, has a longer ranger but slower speeds, which is a perfect option for general Web browsing or texting.

Nobody wants to have a slow connection, right? There are many reasons for this problem but the most common one is because of too many connections at a time.

In this case, you can put a hard-to-guess and unique password and name to avoid lousy neighbors to get access to your wifi.

Nevertheless, if you wanna share them, you can ignore this trick.

If you see this notice, don’t worry! When your device gets its new name and password, it will disconnect you. All you need to do is just reconnect.

And it doesn’t stop here.

Update the Firmware

Update the FirmwareA firmware provides the low-level control for your router. Therefore, updating the firmware is necessary for the first installation.

First, return to the router page of your browser at http://192.168.1.1. Then, using the administrator’s account that you have already created in the previous step to log in.

At Administration tab -> the Firmware Upgrade tab, check the latest firmware version by clicking on the check button. It will take a few seconds to connect to the system and respond.

After that, it will ask if you’d like to update your firmware. Choose OK or YES.

When you finish with the installation, the notice will appear and require you reboot the router.

Just go to the router and press the power button. And wait for the reboot, it can take up to a few minutes.

Most of the time, the problems with your device are caused by outdated firmware or conflicting software. In these cases, you just need to reboot them.

Check It Again

You have done an excellent job in getting this far, everything is almost done! Nevertheless, to make sure your wifi works smoothly, you should check it again to avoid any problem.

When it finishes the reboot, pick the wifi again and go back to the router’s access page in your browser at http://192.168.1.1.

Log in to this page again with the wifi account you have created. Do you remember my trick? Paste your account information at the router bottom and use it in the login router’s access page.

Repeat the login step, and find the Administration tab -> the Firmware Upgrade tab.

At the firmware update tab, click on the Check button. Then wait for it to do its job.

When you see the notice that your firmware is the latest version, you have now finished the Asus rt-n66u setup.

On the contrary, if this announcement doesn’t appear, you can restart your computer or simply check your connection. And repeat all of the update firmware steps above.

Here are some tips to keep your connection strong and stable:

Change your wifi password periodically

Why? Changing the password will terminate all of the strange connections.

The speed of your wifi depends on the bandwidth. When it is filled by many strange connections, your wifi will be really slow. So, the easiest way is disconnecting all by changing your password.

Besides, you have all your smart devices connected to the wifi. Therefore, changing the password regularly is essential to avoid malicious connections.

Write down your password and account information at a safe place.

That is my favorite trick; I am forgetful, so having to remember the wifi password or account which I don’t often use is almost impossible.

So, writing it down is doing yourself a favor when you want to change some setup.

Put your router in the centralized location

Of course, you can put the wifi router anywhere you want. However, it will be better if you put it in a centralized location.

Normally, the average wireless router has a limit of 300 feet (92 meters) outdoors and just 150 feet (46 meters) indoors. While this is typically enough to cover your house or department, the different signal interferences and obstacles can affect the connection.

So, you should consider putting your wifi router at the centralized location for the best network access.

Conclusion

You are now a professional at the Asus rt-n66u setup. Even if you don’t know anything about technology, it shouldn’t be that much of a laborious process if you follow the instructions above.
